A Cashback Mortgage is where a lump sum is paid to the borrower on completion of the mortgage. The funds can be used for any purpose and can make a very useful contribution to the cost of moving; hence they are often aimed at first time buyers.
CashBack mortgages may be offered on fixed, variable or capped rate mortgages. The lender can offer a lump sum of cash at the start or sometimes at an agreed point during the term of your mortgage.
Some lenders will charge an arrangement fee for this type of mortgage and may also make an ‘early repayment charge’ (see glossary) should you choose to pay off the loan within a certain period of time, and may require the cashback to be repaid. There may also be an extended tie-in at the end of the discounted period.
